IDEAL Reclamation (Queesbay Reclamation) is part of reclamation works to expand the island of Penang, Malaysia. IDEAL Reclamation is located in front of Queensbay, south of the first Penang bridge, proximate to Pulau Jerejak. The reclamation works cover an estimated area of 36.5-acres with a 6.2-acres dredged marina area (Queensbay Waterfront Marina).
Technical Description
EDP Consulting Group Sdn. Bhd. was appointed as the Contractor’s Engineer to provide alternative value engineering (VE) design for the following components:
- Sand-key containment bund using sand displacement method. This bund will be constructed along the reclamation boundary, undertake PVD treatment to allow gain strength of underlying soft clays, prior to further reclamation the inner area using hydraulic sand filling;
- Alternative design for reclamation and ground improvement works
- “Double sheet pile” retaining system to support the reclamation area in front of the Queensbay Waterfront Marina.
Our dedicated team was involved in providing consulting engineering services for Geotechnical, Reclamation and Marine Works consisting mainly of ground treatment works, shore protection works, shore retaining system for marina, reclamation works, site supervision and providing technical advice for other associated works.
The site is underlain by marine clay which soft clay thickness of up to 12m thick. In view of the soft compressible marine clay, Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVD) with temporary surcharge was adopted as the ground treatment approach to expedite the dissipation of excess pore water pressure generated from the reclamation works and to eliminate the long-term settlement. For the shore protection system, rock revetment was adopted.
For Queensbay Waterfront Marina, a double sheet pile wall of about 300m in length was value engineered with an alternative section sheet piles type OZ15A (S355JOC) and embedded into medium stiff to stiff clay to achieve the required stability. The front row of sheet pile was designed to be 20m depth and the rear row of sheet pile was designed to be 15m depth. These two rows of sheet piles are 14.5m apart from each other and are tied together with a T32 galvanised rod at 1.35m c/c spacing. These sheet piles are applied with protective coatings and the galvanised tie rod wrapped over using Denso Petrolatum Tape with a 55% overlap. The galvanised tie rod was extended by the use of Halfen Moment JojnTec Coupler.
