Pulau Melaka measuring approximately 110-acres was one of the earliest manmade islands in Malaysia. The manmade island is located close to the mouth of Sungai Melaka.
Technical Description
The soil condition consist of very soft young alluvial deposits with very low shear strength of 5kPa were found in the top 5m of the sea bed. Further down, clay strengths range from 10kPa to 20kPa were encountered. For Soil Improvement, PVD up to length of 25m at square grids of 1.2m x 1.2m was installed with stage filling and surcharging to consolidate the soft clay. A surcharge period of 6 months was adopted. Approximately 1m of consolidation settlement was observed from settlement plate measurements. Due to the very soft clay, a spreader pontoon was used to spread evenly the hydraulic sand used in the reclamation. The difference in level of each sand spread thickness did not exceed 300mm to prevent up heave. The temporary slope during reclamation was in the range of 1 vertical to 10 horizontal to prevent circular slip failure of the slopes, with a final fill depth of 5m plus a surcharge of 1.5m. After the completion of the surcharge, and its removal the slope was trimmed to a slope of 1 vertical to 4 horizontal with slope revetment comprising of primary and secondary armour of granite rock. To prevent wave overtopping, wave wall of 1.2m height was installed at the perimeter of the manmade island.
