Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur’s latest addition to its medical and healthcare centre is made up of a new 12-storey specialist wing. Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur is located at Jalan Bukit Pantai, within the residential suburb of Bangsar, approximately 5km south-west of the capital city Kuala Lumpur. The new 12-storey block accommodates various state of the art facilities such as specialist clinics, rehabilitation centre, heart centre, laboratory and a new linear accelerator bunker with a built-up area of approximately 450,000 ft² with a 4-level basement for carpark.
Technical Description
The existing 5-storey Block A was demolished to make way for the construction of the new wing. Demolition was particularly challenging as the hospital was operating normally during the entire period of demolition works and construction of the new block. Stringent noise and vibration control measures were implemented to ensure minimal interruption to the normal operation of the hospital during the demolition and construction works.
The basement retaining structure is constructed using 600mm thick diaphragm walls. The structure system for the 12-storey block is of reinforced concrete with precast hollow core slab. The new LINAC bunker was constructed in reinforced concrete with 2m thick walls and roof for radiation shielding. Stringent thermal control was necessary for the construction of the thick reinforcement concrete bunker structure to prevent thermal cracking.
Project Highlights, Achievement and Recognition:
- Demolition and linkage to the existing buildings required intensive investigation.
- Lateral movement was also controlled to 25mm during basement construction to minimise any disturbance to the existing tunnel and neighbouring blocks, Block B and Block C.
- All the demolition works of the existing block and the construction of the new specialist wing were carried out during the hospital’s operational hours without disruption to the operation of the hospital.
