The Sungai Besi – Ulu Klang Expressway (SUKE) is a 24.4-kilometre three-laned, dual carriageway, expressway spanning across Selangor and the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur which has an average of 6 million cars travelling back and forth from the city. The Sungai Besi – Ulu Kelang Expressway (SUKE) begins at Ulu Klang, Selangor and can be seen positioning itself above the existing Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR 2) along the Sungai Besi – Ulu Klang stretch and coming to an end at Ampang Kuala Lumpur. The expressway will act as an alternative route to Kajang from Ulu Klang. The expressway consists of 14 interchanges connecting with over 60 residential areas and major highways and roads in the Klang Valley.
Technical Description
EDP Consulting Group Sdn. Bhd. was appointed as the Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) to provide consulting engineering services which comprises of Civil Infrastructure, Geotechnical, Highway, Bridge, Structure and Electrical works for Design Package A5 from CH-7800 to CH-9600. The Sungai Besi – Ulu Klang Expressway (SUKE) generally adopted simply supported pre – tensioned ‘U’ Beams and post – tensioned ‘T’ Beams which are then topped with a cast in – situ deck slab spanning from over 25m to 40m. In cases of where long crossings are necessary, one of which can be seen being put into application would be the long crossing over the Cheras – Kajang Expressway or commonly known as the Grand Saga Expressway, a balanced cantilever cast in – situ segmental box girder system of 60m-100m-60m span was adopted. Package A5 features one of the tallest bridge piers in Malaysia which is approximately 56m high from ground level for its mainline crossing over and above the MRT railway line. To add on to the project highlights, a first–of–its–kind helicoidal (spiralled or helix) ramp in Malaysia was introduced to enable the MK10 ramp ascending from at – grade road level of RL 72.6m to Mainline bridge deck of RL 136.8m. The Sungai Besi – Ulu Klang Expressway (SUKE) Section A5 is underlain by granite formation. The bridge piers are founded on bored piles of varies diameters socketed into the bed rock. EDP was also involved in the design of drainage system, road alignment, street and traffic lighting, road furniture and other road infrastructure works.
Project Highlights, Achievement and Recognition:
- It features a 56.4-metre-tall column pier one of the highest superstructures ever built in the Klang Valley.
- This expressway also has the country’s first helicoidal (spiralled) ramp in Malaysia.
