The Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project comprises of three manmade reclaimed islands namely Island A (2300-acres), Island B (1400-acres) and Island C (800-acres). The reclamation project is part of the Penang Transportation Masterplan (PTMP), aligned to the Penang’s 2030 town planning vision. The Project site is located across the southern coastline of Penang Island between the headlands of Tanjung Teluk Tempoyak (east) and Tanjung Gertak Sanggul (west). The three man-made islands are intended to be developed as a part of the expansion of Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone (FIZ) as well as mixed development comprising of residential and commercial areas. The Penang State Government is the Project Proponent, and reclamation of Island A is intended to be carried out as part of the first phase of works. Island A is located off the southern east coastline of Penang Island proximate to the headlands of Tanjung Teluk Tempoyak and Tanjung Chut.
Technical Description
EDP Consulting Group Sdn. Bhd. was appointed as the Detailed Design Engineer for Island A. Our dedicated team is involved in providing consulting engineering services for Geotechnical and Reclamation works consisting mainly of ground treatment works, shore protection works, dredging and reclamation works, site supervision and providing technical advice for other associated works. The site is underlain by marine clay with soft clay thickness of up to 23m thick. In view of the soft compressible marine clay, Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVD) with temporary surcharge is adopted as the ground treatment approach to expedite the dissipation of excess pore water pressure generated from the reclamation works and to achieve the long-term consolidation settlement to an acceptable post construction settlement limit. For temporary slope protection of reclamation works, containment bunds using engineered containers such as geobag/geotube/sand fill mattress are proposed whilst for the permanent shore protection system, rock revetment and artificial pocket beach are proposed. The navigation channels between Island A and Island B or Penang Island are required to be dredged in order to provide access to fishermen at all tides, wave and weather conditions.
Project Highlights, Achievement and Recognition:
- Providing consulting engineering services for Geotechnical and Marine Works for a manmade island with a large reclaimed area of 2300-acres
- The largest reclaimed island within the Penang South Reclamation project
