The Gardens mixed development has over 4.5 million ft² of total floor area, out of which 1.7 million ft² are lettable space. The Gardens mall has a 4-storey deep basement parking with 5 levels of retail spaces. The Gardens mall also houses a 50,000 ft² convention centre. Connection links between both The Gardens mall and Mid Valley Megamall are provided at basement parking level and a double volume overhead link bridge.
Technical Description
The project site is underlain by Kenny Hill formation and located adjacent to the Klang River, a river flowing through Kuala Lumpur the capital of Malaysia. Therefore, high ground water table was anticipated during basement works. Diaphragm walls of 600mm to 800mm thick, were installed to cut off ground water infiltration to the construction site during excavation works for the basement. The lowest basement is about 8m below ground water table. As for the development’s foundations, 2m thick raft foundation were constructed for the mall and large diameter bored piles up to 1.8m diameter were adopted for the 4 tower blocks. Movement joints were introduced at tower/podium interface to cater for movement.
The carpark structure is constructed using precast half slab on 400mm to 450mm deep band beams for speed and ease of construction. The Gardens mall podium structure consists of reinforced concrete band beams with one way slab system. The atrium space is made up of long cantilever and long span steel truss to cater towards a column free space. Steel structures were used within the mall and can also be found being used for the overhead double volume link bridge connecting the 2 malls.
Project Highlights, Achievement and Recognition:
- Large Atrium space and long cantilever structures of up to 6m.
